Data protection can lower the risk of cyber-attacks, which could adversely affect your business and your reputation. It’s important to understand the best practices for protecting your sensitive information and follow the guidelines. A breach of your private information can result in lawsuits and fines that could have long-term implications for you or dataroom index your company.

Make sure that all files and devices are secured by using a password. This simple action will ensure that hackers are not able to gain access to your information. Use strong passwords that contain complex combinations of letters, numbers and symbols. Change default passwords provided by the vendor to stronger passwords whenever you can. Make sure to use the most current anti-virus software and periodically conduct a full security scan of your system and servers.

Do not send personal information or confidential information via email. This includes Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, passwords, etc. Email isn’t secure, and it could be accessed.

Secure your network and data – Use strong encryption to protect your computers, laptops and portable storage devices. This will help you send information to third parties securely as well as protect information stored on the devices. It’s also important to have a plan for responding to cyber attacks which includes who to inform and how to respond (e.g., employees, customers, credit agencies).

Make sure that you have a copy of all your data. Save the offline copies in an area separate from where your primary copies are. This will prevent attackers from gaining access to your primary copy or deleting it.
